Unclaimed money: search every state for free

States hold money that businesses could not return: old paychecks, bank accounts, utility deposits, refunds, insurance payouts. Searching and claiming is free on your state's official site. Here is the official search for all 50 states plus DC.

How to search

Search every state you have lived or worked in

Money is held by the state of the last address the business had for you. Search your name, past names and old addresses in each of those states. MissingMoney.com is the free multi-state search run by the state administrators' association (NAUPA), but not every state takes part, so also use your state's own site below.

Never pay a finder

Some companies send letters offering to recover your money for a fee or a percentage. You do not need them. Claiming from the state is free, and you can do it yourself. NAUPA explains why searching is always free.

What you will need

Usually proof of identity and proof that you lived at the address on file. Some claims, like ones for a relative who has died, need more papers. Your state's site lists what it needs.

Federal money is separate

Old tax refunds, savings bonds and some pensions are held by federal agencies, not states. USA.gov lists the official federal searches.

Official search, state by state

Each link goes to the state unclaimed property program. A few states run their search on a vendor-hosted site that the state itself links to. Last checked 2026-10-27.
