Help paying energy bills (LIHEAP), state by state
The Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) is federal money that each state uses to help families pay heating and cooling bills, and sometimes to avoid a shutoff. Here is the official LIHEAP page for all 50 states plus DC.
Before you apply
Not sure where to start?
Call the National Energy Assistance Referral line at 1-866-674-6327 to be pointed to your local office. HHS LIHEAP program page.
Facing a shutoff?
Say so when you apply. Most states have crisis help that moves faster for shutoff notices or an empty fuel tank. Also call your utility to ask about payment plans.
Funding can run out
LIHEAP money is limited. Many states stop taking applications or pause help when the year's funding is used up, so apply early and check your state's page for current dates.
Applying is free
LIHEAP does not charge a fee to apply. If someone asks you to pay to get LIHEAP, report it to the HHS fraud hotline at 1-800-447-8477.
What to have ready
Usually a recent energy bill, proof of income for everyone in the home, and ID. Many states take applications only in certain months, so check your state's page for dates.
